Are you an Irish Leaving Certificate student considering studying medicine or dentistry in Bulgaria? Bulgaria has become an increasingly popular destination for Irish students who want to pursue a career in medicine or dentistry without relying entirely on the highly competitive Irish CAO points system.

Bulgarian medical universities offer internationally recognised medical and dental degrees taught in English. As Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, its qualifying medical and dental degrees benefit from European professional qualification recognition arrangements, providing a pathway for graduates who wish to return to Ireland to practise.

However, applying to medical or dental school in Bulgaria isn’t quite as straightforward as passing an entrance examination. Irish students must also meet specific Leaving Certificate requirements established by Bulgaria’s National Centre for Information and Documentation (NACID).

Every applicant educated in Ireland must obtain the relevant NACID recognition certificate before completing their university admission process. This involves verifying Leaving Certificate results, having documents notarised and apostilled, arranging certified Bulgarian translations and submitting an application for recognition.

At MedConnect Europe, we’ve spent approximately 10 years helping Irish students navigate European medical and dental school admissions. Our team manages the documentation and NACID process in-house, alongside university applications, entrance examination preparation and admissions support.

In this guide, we’ll explain everything Irish students need to know about studying medicine or dentistry in Bulgaria for the 2027 intake, including the minimum Leaving Certificate grades, entrance examinations, university options and how to prepare your application.

What Are the Leaving Certificate Requirements to Study Medicine or Dentistry in Bulgaria?

One of the most important things to understand is that Bulgarian universities have two separate admission requirements.

Firstly, you must meet the academic requirements established by NACID to have your Irish secondary education recognised in Bulgaria.

Secondly, you must satisfy the admission requirements of your chosen medical university, which generally involves sitting an entrance examination in Biology and Chemistry and achieving a competitive score.

These requirements serve different purposes, and meeting one does not automatically mean you meet the other.

Minimum Irish Leaving Certificate Grades Required by NACID

NACID, the National Centre for Information and Documentation, is the Bulgarian organisation responsible for recognising foreign educational qualifications, including the Irish Leaving Certificate.

Under the published requirements, Irish students must present Leaving Certificate results in at least six subjects at Ordinary or Higher Level and satisfy one of the following academic pathways.

Option 1: Ordinary Level pathway

Students must achieve a minimum grade of O5 in at least five subjects at Ordinary Level.

For example, a student who achieves O5 or better in five Ordinary Level subjects, together with a sixth Leaving Certificate subject, may satisfy this academic pathway, subject to NACID’s assessment.

Option 2: Higher Level pathway

Students must achieve at least H5 in two Higher Level subjects, together with at least O6 at Ordinary Level or H7 at Higher Level in the remaining subjects needed to meet the six-subject requirement.

For example, a student with the following results would satisfy the stated grade pattern:

SubjectLeaving Certificate Grade
BiologyH5
ChemistryH5
MathematicsO6
EnglishH7
IrishO6
GeographyH7

Importantly, these requirements relate to recognition of your secondary education qualification. They should not be confused with the requirements for obtaining a university place.

The requirements issued by NACID can change at anytime so it is important that you check with your admissions officer once you apply with MedConnect Europe who can keep you updated.

Can You Study Medicine in Bulgaria With Low Leaving Certificate Points?

Potentially, yes.

Unlike the Irish CAO system, where students typically need exceptionally high Leaving Certificate points to secure a place in medicine or dentistry, Bulgarian universities use their own admissions procedures.

For the 2026 admissions cycle, Bulgarian universities ranked applicants only using their university entrance examination scores rather than their Leaving Certificate points.

This meant that a student who achieved relatively modest Leaving Certificate results could still compete for a place at a Bulgarian medical university by performing strongly in its entrance examination.

However, the student still needed to satisfy NACID’s minimum academic eligibility requirements.

This is an important distinction. You do not necessarily need 600-plus CAO points to study medicine or dentistry in Bulgaria, but you cannot disregard your Leaving Certificate results altogether.

The 2027 university admission requirements have not yet been fully published. Although we anticipate a similar admissions structure, MedConnect Europe will keep its applicants informed of any changes announced by the universities.

What Happens if You Don’t Meet the NACID Leaving Certificate Requirements?

Unfortunately, students who do not meet the NACID requirements cannot complete the standard admission process for a Bulgarian medical university using that Leaving Certificate qualification.

This applies even if they perform exceptionally well in the university entrance examination.

For example, a student might sit a Biology and Chemistry entrance examination, achieve one of the highest scores and receive a conditional offer from the university.

However, if NACID subsequently determines that their Leaving Certificate does not meet the requirements for recognition, the student will be unable to satisfy the university’s final documentation requirements.

A conditional university offer is not a guarantee of admission.

At MedConnect Europe, we assess students’ qualifications and expected results early in the application process so that potential eligibility problems can be identified before significant time and expense are committed.

What Is NACID and Why Do Irish Students Need a NACID Certificate?

NACID stands for the National Centre for Information and Documentation, a Bulgarian institution responsible for important aspects of recognising educational qualifications obtained abroad.

When an Irish student applies to study medicine or dentistry in Bulgaria, their Leaving Certificate must be recognised through the relevant Bulgarian recognition procedure.

The resulting certificate confirms the recognition of their secondary education qualification and is required by universities to complete enrolment.

Without the necessary recognition documentation, an applicant cannot simply enrol on the strength of their Leaving Certificate and university entrance examination results.

This is why the NACID process is one of the most important parts of the application for Irish students.

How Do You Get a NACID Certificate With an Irish Leaving Certificate?

Obtaining a NACID certificate involves considerably more than uploading a copy of your Leaving Certificate results.

According to NACID’s published requirements for Ireland, the documents must undergo specific authentication and translation procedures.

Step 1: Obtain your Leaving Certificate results

Once your Leaving Certificate results are released, you must obtain the relevant results document showing your subjects and grades.

NACID requires evidence of at least six Leaving Certificate subjects at Ordinary or Higher Level.

Step 2: Have your documents verified and notarised in Ireland

Your educational documents must undergo the appropriate authentication process.

A key detail is that NACID requires the authenticity of the educational document itself to be verified by a notary public or attorney.

It is not necessarily sufficient for a notary simply to certify that a photocopy matches the original. The certification must specifically address the document’s authenticity or the signature of the official who issued it.

This is an important technical distinction that can cause problems for applicants who are unfamiliar with Bulgaria’s documentation requirements.

MedConnect Europe works with Irish notarial professionals who understand these requirements and helps prepare the appropriate authentication.

Step 3: Obtain an apostille from the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs

After the appropriate notarisation or authentication, the relevant signature must be legalised with an apostille through the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs.

An apostille is a form of international authentication used between countries participating in the Hague Apostille Convention.

This allows the relevant Bulgarian authorities to recognise the authentication attached to the Irish documents.

For NACID applications, it is essential that the apostille relates to the correct authentication.

Step 4: Arrange certified Bulgarian translations

Your documents must then be translated into Bulgarian and certified in accordance with NACID’s requirements.

For translations completed in Bulgaria, NACID requires notarial certification of the translator’s signature. Alternatively, the relevant certification may be carried out through the Bulgarian embassy where applicable.

MedConnect Europe uses its in-house translation team, which specialises in preparing Irish educational documents for Bulgarian applications.

Step 5: Submit the NACID application

Once the documents are correctly prepared, the application can be submitted to NACID for review.

NACID examines the educational qualification and supporting documents before deciding whether to issue the relevant recognition certificate.

Step 6: Submit the recognition certificate to the university

Once the required certificate has been issued, it can be included in the student’s university documentation to complete the relevant admission requirements.

MedConnect Europe handles this entire process for its clients, from Irish notarisation and DFA apostille arrangements through to Bulgarian translations, NACID submission and coordination with the university.

This means students do not need to independently arrange appointments with different service providers or navigate the Bulgarian administrative system without assistance.

When Should Irish Students Apply to Study Medicine or Dentistry in Bulgaria?

One of the biggest mistakes students make is waiting until their Leaving Certificate results are released before beginning their university application. Unfortunately, this can put their application at serious risk if it is submitted too late.

Irish Leaving Certificate results are generally released in August, while Bulgarian universities may begin their entrance examinations months earlier.

Students who wait until August can find themselves attempting to prepare their documents, sit an entrance examination and complete the recognition process within a very short period.

Can You Apply Before Receiving Your Leaving Certificate Results?

Yes. Irish students can generally begin their applications and sit entrance examinations before receiving their final Leaving Certificate results, subject to the university’s published rules.

For example, Plovdiv Medical University has historically offered entrance examinations beginning around April, several months before Irish Leaving Certificate results become available.

A student could therefore sit an early entrance examination, achieve a competitive score and potentially receive a conditional offer before their Leaving Certificate results are released.

However, their final admission would still depend on satisfying the relevant NACID requirements and completing all university documentation.

This creates an opportunity for Irish students to complete a significant part of the admissions process before August.

Why August Is the Most Important Month for Irish Applicants

Once Leaving Certificate results become available, students often face a very tight deadline.

Their results must be authenticated, apostilled, translated into Bulgarian and submitted to NACID.

After the certificate is issued, the relevant documents must still reach the university before its final deadline.

In our experience, students should allow at least approximately 30 days for the overall document preparation and recognition process, although actual timeframes depend on the authorities involved and the individual application.

Unfortunately, there isn’t always a full month available between results day and the final university document deadlines.

This is where advance preparation becomes especially important.

MedConnect Europe has approximately 10 years of experience organising these applications and has developed internal procedures to help students meet university deadlines, even when the available timeframe is extremely short.

Based on our historical client experience, we have achieved a document completion success rate of over 98% within the relevant deadlines.

Nevertheless, this is not a guarantee. Delays with notarial services, apostille processing, NACID assessment or university procedures can occur outside our control.

Our approach is therefore to prepare everything possible before the Leaving Certificate results are released, reducing the amount of work that must be completed during the final weeks.

Which Universities in Bulgaria Offer Medicine and Dentistry in English?

Bulgaria has several universities offering English-taught medicine programmes to international students.

However, not every university offers dentistry, and the level of competition can differ considerably depending on the institution and course.

The main universities MedConnect Europe works with include:

UniversityMedicineDentistry
Medical University of PlovdivYesYes
Medical University of SofiaYesYes
Medical University of VarnaYesYes
Medical University of PlevenYesNo
Trakia University, Stara ZagoraYesNo
Burgas State UniversityYesNo

For students particularly interested in dentistry, Plovdiv, Sofia and Varna are the main Bulgarian university options to consider.

For medicine, students have a wider selection of universities.

Each university has its own entrance examination procedures, admission calendar, tuition fees and available places. Students should consider these factors when deciding where to apply.

Is Dentistry More Competitive Than Medicine in Bulgaria?

Based on our experience during the 2026 intake, dentistry was considerably more competitive at certain Bulgarian universities, particularly Plovdiv.

At Plovdiv Medical University, the dental applicants admitted through the admissions process we monitored in 2026 achieved perfect entrance examination scores.

In practical terms, this meant students needed 100% in the entrance examination to secure a dentistry place among that applicant group.

This illustrates just how competitive the university can become when the number of applicants exceeds the available places.

However, competition varies between universities. Other Bulgarian dental schools were less competitive during the same admissions cycle, making it possible for students with lower entrance examination scores to secure places.

Medicine was generally much less competitive across the universities we worked with during 2026.

Students with appropriate entrance examination results had a wider selection of options, and securing a medicine place was generally more manageable than securing dentistry at Plovdiv.

We anticipate that medicine may remain relatively accessible for eligible students in the 2027 intake, although competition and admission thresholds can change every year.

For dentistry applicants, we particularly recommend having a strategy that considers multiple universities rather than relying exclusively on one highly competitive institution.

Bulgarian Medical University Entrance Examinations for Irish Students

In addition to satisfying NACID’s academic requirements, applicants must normally pass the entrance examination set by their chosen university.

Most Bulgarian medical university entrance examinations assess students in two subjects:

Biology and Chemistry.

These examinations are generally based on secondary-school science knowledge, with questions designed to assess whether applicants have the scientific foundation needed to begin medical or dental training.

Many universities use multiple-choice questions, although the precise format, syllabus, marking system and examination rules vary.

When Are the Entrance Exams Held?

One advantage of applying to certain Bulgarian universities is that they offer several examination opportunities throughout the admissions season.

Universities such as Plovdiv and Varna have historically organised multiple examination dates, often beginning around April and continuing through September.

This gives students flexibility when choosing when to take the examination, although the availability of later examinations and remaining places should never be assumed.

Sofia Medical University has traditionally taken a different approach.

In previous years, Sofia generally held one main entrance examination for EU applicants and a separate examination for non-EU applicants.

During the 2026 admissions cycle, however, Sofia introduced an additional examination on 2 October 2026 because further places remained available.

This was an additional opportunity rather than a guaranteed feature of the admission calendar.

Students applying for 2027 should not assume that Sofia will repeat this arrangement.

Exact examination dates for the 2027 intake will depend on the universities’ official announcements.

How Difficult Are the Biology and Chemistry Entrance Exams?

The difficulty of a Bulgarian medical university entrance examination depends on the university, the student’s existing knowledge and the level of competition.

Students who have studied Higher Level Biology and Chemistry for the Irish Leaving Certificate may already have a useful scientific foundation.

However, the Bulgarian examination syllabus and question styles are not necessarily identical to those of the Irish Leaving Certificate.

Students should therefore prepare specifically for the examination set by their chosen university rather than relying entirely on their Leaving Certificate revision.

This becomes particularly important for dentistry applicants targeting competitive universities such as Plovdiv, where even a small number of incorrect answers may significantly affect their ranking.

How MedConnect Europe Helps Students Prepare for Entrance Exams

MedConnect Europe provides structured entrance examination preparation to help students perform as strongly as possible.

Our preparation resources include:

MedConnect Synapse brings together resources designed to help applicants study, practise questions and prepare for the examination format they will encounter.

By combining these resources with guidance from our admissions team, students can focus on improving their examination performance while we assist with the administrative requirements of their application.

Our goal is not simply to help students pass an entrance examination. It is to help them achieve a score that makes them competitive for their preferred university and course.

How Are Irish Students Ranked for University Admission in Bulgaria?

A common misconception is that students with the highest Leaving Certificate points automatically receive priority when applying to Bulgarian medical universities.

For the universities and admission routes we worked with during the 2026 intake, this was not the case.

University rankings were based on applicants’ entrance examination performance, rather than their Irish Leaving Certificate points.

This meant that the Leaving Certificate served primarily as evidence of academic eligibility for recognition through NACID.

The entrance examination score was the decisive factor in determining how applicants ranked for available university places.

For example, a student with lower Leaving Certificate points but an excellent entrance examination score could potentially rank above a student with very high Leaving Certificate points who performed less well in the entrance examination.

This creates an alternative pathway for Irish students who may not achieve the CAO points required for medicine or dentistry in Ireland.

However, every applicant must still satisfy NACID’s minimum academic requirements.

The 2027 ranking formulas have not yet been fully confirmed. MedConnect Europe will advise applicants of any changes as universities publish their updated admissions procedures.

Common Mistakes Irish Students Make When Applying to Bulgaria

After approximately a decade of supporting medical and dental school applicants, one of the most common problems we encounter is students underestimating how long the administrative side of the application takes.

Many assume that the university entrance examination is the main challenge and that the documentation can be arranged afterwards.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.

The biggest issue for Irish applicants is often the timing of Leaving Certificate results in August.

If students have not already prepared their applications, arranged their supporting documents and understood the NACID requirements, they can find themselves facing university deadlines with insufficient time to complete the process.

Another common misunderstanding concerns document authentication.

Simply obtaining a certified photocopy or an apostille does not necessarily mean the documents satisfy NACID’s requirements. The correct signatures and authenticity statements must be certified.

Incorrectly prepared documents may need to be redone, potentially causing further delays.

Students also sometimes misunderstand the difference between a conditional university offer and final admission.

A strong entrance examination result does not remove the requirement to obtain recognition of the Leaving Certificate.

At MedConnect Europe, we address these problems by planning the admissions process in advance, identifying potential issues early and coordinating the documentation requirements alongside the student’s university application.

Our team guides students through each stage so they understand what needs to be completed, when it needs to be completed and which documents are required.

Can You Return to Ireland to Practise Medicine After Graduating From Bulgaria?

For many Irish students and their parents, this is one of the most important questions.

Yes, graduates of qualifying Bulgarian medical programmes have a recognised route to medical registration in Ireland under EU professional qualification rules.

Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, and medical qualifications that meet the relevant requirements of EU Directive 2005/36/EC can benefit from the European system for recognising professional qualifications.

The Irish Medical Council provides a registration pathway for doctors who have obtained qualifying medical degrees in EU and EEA countries.

Bulgarian medical graduates with a qualification listed under the relevant EU rules, together with any required accompanying documentation, can apply for recognition and registration in Ireland.

The Medical Council also identifies Bulgaria among the EU countries whose graduates are considered to have completed basic medical training for the purposes of its registration pathways.

However, recognition of a qualification is not the same as automatic registration or a guaranteed job. Graduates must still meet the Irish Medical Council’s requirements and obtain the appropriate registration before practising.

You can find more information on the Irish Medical Council’s EU/EEA registration page.

Can You Return to Ireland to Practise Dentistry After Graduating From Bulgaria?

Yes. Graduates with qualifying Bulgarian dental qualifications can also apply for registration with the Dental Council of Ireland through the relevant EU qualification recognition pathway.

The Dental Council has a specific application procedure for dentists who qualify in EU member states.

This generally involves providing evidence of the dental qualification, a certificate of conformity, proof of language proficiency and other registration documentation.

As with medicine, graduates must complete the registration process before practising dentistry in Ireland.

Further information is available from the Dental Council of Ireland.

MedConnect Europe’s Experience With Irish Medical and Dental Graduates

MedConnect Europe has been helping Irish students pursue medical and dental education in Europe for approximately 10 years.

During that time, we have supported students who have gone on to graduate and pursue careers in Ireland.

We have also developed a network of doctors and dentists working in Ireland after completing their degrees at European universities, including institutions in Bulgaria.

This experience allows us to provide students with practical insight into the journey beyond university admission.

For Irish families considering medical or dental education abroad, knowing that others have successfully followed a similar pathway can provide valuable reassurance.

Why Apply to Bulgarian Medical Universities Through MedConnect Europe?

Applying to a Bulgarian medical university involves several different stages, many of which must be completed within strict deadlines.

Students need to understand university eligibility requirements, prepare for entrance examinations, authenticate their Irish educational documents, obtain apostilles, arrange Bulgarian translations, complete NACID recognition and submit their final university documents.

At MedConnect Europe, we bring these stages together into a coordinated admissions process.

Our team supports Irish applicants with university selection, entrance examination preparation, application guidance and the complete documentation process.

One of our particular strengths is our in-house document preparation system.

Rather than leaving students to independently find notaries, arrange DFA legalisation, locate suitable Bulgarian translators and navigate NACID requirements, we coordinate these services on their behalf.

This is especially valuable for Irish Leaving Certificate students, whose final results are not released until August.

Our systems have been developed through years of working with European university admissions departments and supporting students through tight application deadlines.

We also provide access to our MedConnect Synapse preparation platform, giving applicants the materials they need to prepare effectively for Biology and Chemistry entrance examinations.

Although university admission and external administrative processing can never be guaranteed, our aim is to give each eligible student the strongest possible preparation and a well-organised application.
